In today’s world, there is at least one skill that is definitely necessary for you to acquire. That’s English. Being able to write, speak, read, and listen to English effectively with not only native speakers of English, but non-native speakers of English is crucial in this new era.

Recently, Rakuten annouced that their official corporate language will be English, and there are other companies that insist on the same idea.

This current move is based on the fact that Japan is no longer the best place to sell. Therefore, Japanese companies need to expand their horizons, and dive into other countries in the world.

Although it seems simple and easy, being able to use English is quite hard. One of the reasons for this is the way English is taught in Japan in public schools. Still originating from the old way of learning a language, classes center around reading, and a little bit of listening.

Like any other learnable skills, English should be practiced very often in a short period of time.

Because of Rakuten’s announcement and newspaper articles on this matter, there are many people who feel the urge to improve the current English education. Yet, in order to fundamentally change the way public education is configured today, we need to think of an alternative.

Possibly, we could require all the children of ages 9 to 10 to live and study in an English speaking country. That’s just an idea, but we need to actively go out of the country to change the current situation.

Business coaching takes a lot of its core metaphors from the world of sports and competition. After all, running a business is, in many ways, the ultimate in competitive exercises and managing your assets and workforce is a lot like coaching a squad of your own.

Like most other enterprises in life, project management-type thinking can help in reality, and there are lots of examples from sports that you can take with you into project management training, on teamwork, development, and the limits of preparation.

In football, a lot of time is spent studying offensive game recording of rival players. Doing this gives information on movements, on an individual footing, that will let you calculate which way a running back will make a move, how a receiver rushes their courses, whether or not a given offensive lineman can be made to bite on a hip break, or if a running back is better able to break tackles going left or right. With enough study, you can reconstruct some of the play-book used by the opposing team; the same applies to project management and market analysis for your enterprise. Studying what your competitors are doing in your market place is the key for figuring out how to make complementary goods, or set your goods and services as a viable choice. Look for tendencies, like when they acquire advertising and what sorts of advertisements they acquire. When you look at your opponent’s advertisements, put on your project manager cap, and try to reproduce the means they took to make that advert - look at when the advert appeared, look at the creation time for the advert to find it’s submission date, and then look back from there (as all project managers do), going back in time; with this you can even make a decent measure on your competitor’s product development phase. In this way, you’re using project management techniques as a ‘defensive coordinator’, trying to anticipate the offensive steps your adversary will make.

To research individual players, look for who the promotion is targeted at. Ask yourself if that commercial would work for you, for your consumers, or for a group of clients you’d like to reach. Then ask yourself why the commercial works in those situations (or, more importantly, if it doesn’t, why it doesn’t. Like any coach in a game, a good project manager has to be alert to the mistakes - the missed blocks and failed executions - of his rival. Plus, you can learn from other’s errors this way, which is always less expensive than making your own.)

Now that you’ve taken a ‘defensive coordinator’s’ perspective, it’s time to turn to the offense. You’ve identified the fragile areas in the market. Now it’s time to look at separated elements that can hinder your tactics. Using the data you gained from in public available resources, try to estimate when your opposition is going to throw out a new product release; based on what class of goods they produce, this may have a seasonal feature to it. In particular, look for new upgrades of existing packages; particularly in the desktop application field, there’s a general one and a half year to two year release phase. If you’ve got a new product coming out that has active competition, you want to schedule your release at the hypothetical point in time where the customers using rival goods have learned all the qualities and are demandingmore.

In sports, an offensive manager does phase two project management. The purposes have been set, now it’s time to practice, practice, practice and make certain that your team is prepared to carry out your plan, and your vision. This means training, and putting into practice on the field; running a football play is very much a runs of coordinated moves - everyone has to be at the right spot at the right time; the Walsh offense in professional football is the epitome of this; its ability relies on a quarterback who can study the entire field quickly, and go through automated ‘reads’ of where his flanker, slot and center receivers are, while being conscious that his outlet receivers at tight end and running back are available for a shorter pass. This sounds intellectual, and oddly calm to read, while it’s all being executed in about three seconds after the snap, and the quarterback is relying on his offensive linemen to buy him time time to make his reads, and to provide his receivers extra time to get farther down the field.

’OK, hole one - covered, hole two covered, flanker covered, to the tight end over the middle. Dump it.’; in less time than it takes to read this a quarterback has to gather the information, make the decision, and avoid being flattened by a 300-pound defensive end or 250 pound line backer. Making certain that a quarterback can gather this information, and make the right choices is prime project management as related to managing your staff employees. You have to give them the abilities and the judgment to assemble data about the business, and give them pre-programmed groups of options that they can choose from when conditions demand a choice now, rather than later!and if that sounds like training up your negotiators and sales agents to ‘make the call’ on a deal, it should - it’s the same kind of proficiency. It just involves money rather than 300-pound men charging after you to do bodily damage.

One thing that coaches are able to do that doesn’t work as well for business in project management contexts, is cover up of intent and strategy. In sports, considerable effort is spent on making a defensive or offensive package look unlike from what it really is. For instance, if you know that the offense is going to do a running pass, it’s worth to bring eight men up to the line of scrimmage to stuff the run. If the offense is likely to throw the football, you drop into a zone coverage package, or you try to hurry the passer with down linemen charging the quarterback; this puts the best on the offense to conceal their intended play as much as possible, and to get the offense to hesitate on their strategy in reaction to your formation. Similarly, on the defensive side of the ball, it’s worth to conceal a blitz with zone coverage packages (or zone-blitz packages as they’re called), so that the quarterback’s last second play corrections can be turned awry. While this sort of thing has some function in business, and it’s a useful thought training (following Napoleon’s mantra of ‘Several times a day, I ask myself ‘What would I do if the foe appeared in an unforeseen spot?’), it doesn’t run as well in business because the rules of engagement are more wide open.
